ELMONT FD EXPLORER POST 709
The Elmont FD Explorer Post 709 was established in 1964 in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America. The purpose of the post is to encourage young adults, both male and female, to learn more about the fire service and perhaps become a firefighter or emergency medical technician. Over the years, many Explorers have gone on to become members of the Elmont Fire Department. Some have also become career firefighters and EMTs with departments such as FDNY. There have been eighteen Elmont FD chiefs who started as Explorers, including the four present chiefs.
The post meetings are at different Elmont firehouses each month. At monthly drills, members are given hands-on experience in the operation of the varied firefighting and rescue equipment. Explorers are supervised by adult members of the Elmont Fire Department and are given all required uniforms and equipment at no charge. From time to time the Elmont Explorers will drill and train with other Explorer Posts and Junior Fire Departments in Nassau County.
If you are a young adult ages 14 to 17 and are interested in learning about firefighting and emergency medical service, you may like to consider joining the Elmont Fire Department's Explorer Post 709. The meetings are generally held the second and fourth Monday of each month (except May and December).
